Tree Hugger

  • By Don Gain Jr.

Yes. I am a tree-hugger. Whatever that means…

Do I love being outdoors? Absolutely.
Do I love being surrounded by trees and all things green and blue? Completely.
Do I love the Earth? Totally.

Well, if one more person asks me why I am in the “printing” industry because they think it is the reaper of our forests and green spaces I think I will lose it!!

Yes, we use paper. Yes, paper comes from trees. But, did you know there are many recycled and sustainable options available today? And, no! That doesn’t necessarily mean a price increase.

Fact: Trees are a renewable resource and if the products are produced properly they are also biodegradable.

Question: Do you think your computer or cell phone can state the same?

Technology brings many positive aspects into our lives. But I caution you to believe that moving to a “paperless” society is more environmentally friendly. Just how much energy do you think it takes to power the cloud and server rooms around the world? Does all the necessary hardware come from a renewable resource? Is every part of it recyclable or biodegradable?

However, our choices shouldn’t be about this vs. that, rather, finding the balance that works for us, our business and future generations. By making the best choices available today and moving forward to make better choices available in the future, we are doing our part and hopefully a little more. Do not surrender your values for progress.

I like what I am seeing in our industry. Yes, we are adopting more technology into our processes, which helps to increase our efficiency but also provides great opportunities for our customers. Therein is the beauty. Again, it isn’t about this vs. that but a mix and balance.

Why print all those brochures if you don’t need to?
Why send a DM piece if you aren’t speaking to the individual?
Why create a QR Code if it isn’t really doing anything?

Find your balance.

The real appeal for me is helping our customers lighten their footprint. It isn’t only about the resources we use but the approach we take. Remember, you can use the most environmentally friendly materials to produce environmentally friendly products and still create unnecessary waste.

So, that is why I am here. To help our customers… and future tree-huggers.
